KBT1 Internal Battery Adapter
If you really like to travel light, you'll love the KBT1, which provides the convenience of an internal 8-AA cell battery for your K1
transceiver. Add the KAT1 auto-tuner, and you've got a true all-in-one-box integrated station--just add wire and key! (We didn't
sacrifice the speaker, either; the 0.5-watt replacement speaker fits snugly alongside the batteries.)
- 5-10 hours operating time on one charge (NiMH or Alkaline)
- Includes easy-access top cover--uses just two thumb screws
- Recessed on/off slide switch to disable battery for transport
- Rugged, low-drop battery-protection diode (less than 0.2V @ 500 mA)
- Light-weight custom battery/speaker bracket
Your Choice of Batteries
You can use virtually any type of AA cell with the KBT1, disposable or rechargeable (alkaline, NiCd, NiMH, etc.). The replacement top cover provides quick access to the batteries, so it's easy to recharge them using any charger of your choice*. (For safety reasons, we recommend that batteries not be charged inside the K1.) You can save money by sharing batteries and charger with your HT.
Note: Newer AA-size batteries from some manufacturers (Panasonic, Maha, etc.) may exceed the standard diameter specification,
which is intended to
increase capacity. Batteries over 0.55" (14 mm) in diameter should not be used with the KBT1 because they will not fit in the standard AA-cell
holder supplied. Radio Shack NiMH cells (among others) are the correct size.
See our Shipping Status Page for the latest KBT1 shipping dates.
* To maximize operating time, we recommend setting power to 2-4 watts when
using the internal battery, even though our tests show power output can be as high as 6 to 7 watts. 1600-mAhr NiMH cells may provide longer life
than alkalines because of their relatively flat discharge curve. (You can operate down to 8.2 V or even lower with virtually no instability,
thanks to the K1's double-regulated VFO.) The Radio Shack #23-422 8-cell Fast-Charger is an excellent choice for use with NiMH or NiCd batteries.
