EQP Soapbox Reports

Conditions were very poor compared with last year. Only one station heard/worked outside Europe VE1RGB, fine signal on 20m & 40m, Nothing heard above 20m. Was hoping to hear more European entries this year, thanks to Kris SP9NSV for only CW/SSB QSO.
73, MW0IDX, Roger, Wales, K2, 2724

Here in Munich an important HAM conference  http://www.amateurfunktagung.de/  took place at the same time as the EQP. Our club's chairman (?) held a talk about moving from VHF/UHF to HF for class 2 license OMs. Because he, among other things, talked about the K2, he asked me to set up my station at the conference. To make a long story short, I was so busy answering questions (How long do you need; How difficult is it; is there 100W version; Is there a larger version - the knobs are too small [???] ...), that I only managed 4 QSOs, none of which were with other Elecrafters. Also the amount noise at the venue was very high (RF but mostly people talking), so if I didn't hear any callers, the fault was at my end. DK0MN is the call of our club.

Comments: Great fun with crummy band conditions! I could work everyone I could hear, and as a relatively new owner of #2597, I got good experience using this rig and exercising filtering and the new computer interface I built for it. All worked flawlessly. What a great pleasure to use such a fine rig. It was fun working the Kx1's...they have a distinctive cw note which is extremely pleasing to the ear. Thanks for such a great radio, and for putting on this fun event!
73 from K5MO, John, NC, K2, 2597

I enjoy this QSO party but I think condx was less than last year
7K1CPT, Yama, Japan, K2, 1486

Soapbox: Band conditions were not the best but the party was still a lot of fun. Thanks to everyone who participated! I loved hearing all those K2s on the air! CU next year!
KØTC, Ron, MN, K2, 700

The condition was not good. But I could work 3 NA stations on 21MHz.
They were very weak. Their RST were 339 or 439.I was surprised very much. Because I could QSO with N6KR/Wayne. JA station's were active on 7MHz. I could QSO with them on Sunday morning.  I like K1 because the sound is becoming clear very much. VFO is good for the sound rather than DDS. I hope see you again next EQP.
73, JK7UST, Sugi, Japan, K1, 1470

Nothing heard on 15 meters, which was very alive in the ARRL SSB DX test last weekend. Fell asleep during Saturday night break or would have worked more West Coast on 40.
73, W8TM, Paul, OH, K1, 850

Soapbox: Worked 20m band only – condx were not good and didn’t hear any USA stations. Worked only two dx: VE1RGB & YI9RVT.
SP9NSV, Kris, Poland, K2, 3143

Hi, friends! This year my score's not very exciting, but I had fun anyway. Well, my K1's still fine surviving over 100 times bike touring. What a tough guy! (I mean, K1. Not me....)
JP6VCH, Shin, Japan, K1, 771

Fun little contest. Worked K2 S/n's TT4 thru 3800.
N7RVD, Brian "Ed"ward Wingert, WA, k2, 237

I had only four QSOs, but I had a ball. I'll try to more QSO with DX stations on EQP next year.
72 & 73. Thanks. 7L3DNX TAKUMI TAKENO OP:TAKE, Japan, K2, 3534

Greetings, Tnx for sponsering a laid back contest!! It was fun to work some 2 digit Elecraft serial numbers!!!!
W8VE, Roger, OH, K2, 3060

I was on 40 and stumbled across this QSO party. My first QSO was with Wayne, N6KR, and he told me what it was all about. As you can see, I didn't get into this one full bore but did have fun. As for awards, I'm working on a K1/QRP DXCC and am up to 75 countries. I was amazed at how much DX I could work with the K1 during the ARRL CW DX Contest. The nice thing about the QRP DXCC is that QSLs are not required, just log extracts and ten bucks.
73, W7GB, Don, WA, K2, 1648

Got on twice over the weekend, not much activity on 20 M in the afternoon, but 40 M seemed good in the evening. Listened, but did not hear any SSB activity.
K4JPN, Steve, GA, K2, 1422

Great contest. Nice and steady, no pushing or shoving. The K2 operators were everywhere. I expected more KX1 ops, but only worked 4 out of 45 contacts. I was almost exclusively on 40M, with a few on 20M. Seeings how I was "trapped" on the same bands as other KX1 ops, wonder where they were? The built-in memory keyer was surprisingly sufficient for contest operation.
WA3FAE, Forrest, MD, KX1, 347

I'm just enjoying to build K1 #1742, but it's not finish before EQP. I hope to meet you with my K1. Thanks everybody.
JJ1XET/3, Naoyasu Hosoda, Japan, TS-680

Found the contest very slow S&P - no phone contacts??? Heard DK0SU but no contact. More action on Sunday. I started on Saturday outdoor mobile battery with a modified SuperAntenna. But gave up after the Vibroplex Mighty Mite straight key kept losing contact. Better from home with the HF6V. 10 & 15 were dead. 20 & 40 were active with multiple contests. So I worked the Oklahoma contest QRP parallel to the EQP, reloading Writelog logs as needed. Not many contacts but fun. Only EQP contacts claimed here (43 in OkQP). Hope for better next year.
VE3AGC, Bob, Ontario, K2, 606

Condx very poor in North Ohio - Waiting for next year <g>.
73, W8YMO, Harry, K2, 1202

Didn't have much time for operating but enjoyed it just the same. Seemed to do better on 40m Sat PM and Sun AM than on 20m Sat daytime. Thanks for the fun.
Love my K1, K4NVJ, Joe, AL, K1, 764

Thought initially conds were great as first CW QSO was VE1RGB, but was only able to find two more EQP participants: SP9NSV and DK0SU
LA3ZA, Sverre, Norway, K2, 2198

Very poor condx during EQP. 10/15m dead on both days. 20m poor, 40/80m moderate, but US stations very weak. Worked twice with VE1RGB on 20m and 40m. EQP activity in Europe very low, worked 1 Europ. station on 20m. Heard YI9RVT on Saturday, but he could not get my call correct, so no qso. No need for a computer program to calculate my score this time. Thanks for organizing.
73/72, PA0RBO, Robert, Netherlands, K2, 2406

Had a heavy commitment, shopping with the XYL for a "mother-of-the-bride" dress all day Saturday!!! So only 3 hours to operate, the ionosphere was an rf sponge! but it was a blast! Looking forward to the next one. All confirmed contacts on 40, one almost on 20 @ 1458z, but couldn't pull it through in time! Tuned around a lot on 80 and 160 but nothing heard. Must put up larger wire antennas!!
73, WA7BOC, Roger, WA, K2, 755

Enjoyed the QSO party but had some rig problems and had to restrict my operating to 40 mtrs later Saturday evening.
Tnx and 73, VE3XL, Ric, Ontario, K1, 968

During the action (?), I found time to rewire my long dead Belkin three button mouse as a paddle. I then tried it for a few minutes on 40M. Either my CW was unreadable, or nobody was interested in answering my "CQ EQP"'s so I gave up and went to bed shortly after. Very little activity in this event. The rules should include the exchange of QTH as a multiplier for those tracking awards and others (like me) who like to see the score build as multipliers are logged. More advance ublicity should also promote more activity.
W0SOC, Bob, FL, K2, 438

SSB for EQP was like hen's teeth...Not only bands bad, but I couldn't find one other K2 on SSB.
AA2VK, Tom, NY, K2, 1213

One DX station, DK0SU. Band conditions were poor. I worked 40, 20 and 15 meter bands. Thanks for putting this event on.
KL7V, Sam, OK, K2, 3158

My first EQP, sure wish the band conditions were better. I made 14  contacts in 2.5 hrs of operating on 15m, 20m and 40m, all with <5w on CW and <10w on SSB, except one. Contacts were split between CW & SSB. My five Elecraft contacts were on CW with other K2 ops. I enjoyed the EQP and am looking forward to the next one.
N2EAB, Mike, NY, K2, 2118

Another fun contest. I used K2 SN 3900 at 5 watts to a Force12 Sigma 40XK vertical dipole antenna set up temporarily in my back yard. The wind picked up substantially on Saturday afternoon. I had to guy the antenna to keep it from blowing over. I actually put it down for quite a while and used my 20 meter fullwave horizontal loop that is hanging from the ceiling of my garage. Great to work Wayne, N6KR on 20 meters. See you next year.
W0NTA, Dick, CO, K2, 3900

Highlight of the contest (hands down): working JR9OPJ (his K2 at 5W) on 20M, JA-land being a long haul to this coast at the best of times. It took me several minutes to assemble his call sign from fragments. Unfortunately, copying his numbers was out of the question so I haven't counted him. Still, it never ceases to amaze me what a simple
multi-band antenna and the great front end of the K2 can accomplish. Regards to all who worked me (including several KX1 ops). I operated at 100W, CW only, in EQP and the QTH is just outside Halifax, Nova Scotia.
VE1RGB, Gary, Nova Scotia, K2, 2519

Fun contest, too bad I had to work it in between kids and family obligations, and too bad condx were not that good. Still any chance to
use my awesome Elecraft rigs is time well spent!
KQ9L, Rich, IL, K1,K2,KX1, 1669,3232,21

Just a part time effort this year because of other commitments resulted in a total of 60 points. All QSOs made using K2 - #2427 running 4.5 watts to a 66 foot doublet or a 32 foot vertical. Nothing heard on 80m Saturday evening. Just like the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team says "Next year..."
VA3DF, Doug, Ontario, K2, 2427

All worked in several short sessions (like when I walked past the shack) with QRP (<5W.) on 20 and 40 mtrs CW using casual hunt and pounce technique. The bands were in bad shape.
41 QSO's with the following rigs types reported:
35 - K2
1 - KX1
4 - K1
1 - 15W (unknown type)
It was fun!
AB9V, Mike, IN, K2, 3993

Not as much activity as last year for some reason. Perhaps because it wasn't announced in the journals. Very good condx on 40 and 20m. Strong signals from the midwest and east coast on 15m also, but a conspicuous lack of EQP activity on that band also.
73, de K6SE, Earl, CA, K2, 2622

Great to hear all the K1, K2 and KX1's
K8DD, Hank, MI, K2, 3519

Not as much activity as I had hoped, but was still fun to hear everyone that I was able to work. I wanted to try some different modes other than I normally work during a contest, but wasn't very successful at SSB or PSK31. Most activity was on CW. Didn't hear Eric or Wayne on either ;-( The bands seemed to improve in the early evening, and stations from the Mid West and the North East started coming in on 40, but few and far between. I felt like the lone gunman by the nights end. One notable QSO was Hank K8DD at 5 watts on 80! Thanks for the fun time and look forward to the next event! We should do this more than once a year! Only heard 1 K1, no KX1's and the rest were either K2's or non-Elecraft.
73's KG6CYN (now K6ESE), Trev, CA, K2, 3538

Bursts of activity with periods of quiet. K1 still working nicely,
had not used it for a while, K2 in middle of updates.
K3WW, Charles, PA, K1, 778

This contest had a special feel about it. I only heard and talked to Elecraft rigs. With the bands the way they are, I wished the KX1 had 80m.
73, AH6EZ/W9, Dick, IL, KX1, 424

Just received my KX1 from another ham Saturday about noon, was fooling
around with wire antennas and ran across the EQP. Took the rig inside and my 135' zepp antenna and operated for a total of a couple of hours, made 27 qso's on 40 meters only. Great Rig, Great QP and Great Fun!!!
I'm hooked......NZ8J, Tim, OH, KX1, 427

Missed most of Saturday since I was returning from a visit to my Daughter and family in Durham, NC. Not much activity on 20 Meters while I was on. And couldn't raise anyone on 80 Meters. Once again I worked quite a few FISTS members. I think the "EQP" is a great idea and look forward to the next one. Guess I'll have to rig up to run SSB one of these times. Got to get a mike which can plug into the K2. But being an old CW op, it's hard to get excited about SSB - Hi! But think I'll try some of the other digital modes. Those KX1's sure sound good. Trying hard to keep from getting one, may just break down and get a kit at Dayton. - Hi!
